Star Child

A Mother’s Journey through Grief

About Star Child

Star Child by Jennifer J. Martin tells the heartfelt story of the author’s healing journey after the loss of her son, Kelly. Diagnosed at age four with the rare inherited disorder Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), Kelly faced many challenges throughout his life before passing away at twenty-three from a sudden heart attack. Through this poignant memoir, Martin honors her son’s life, offering solace and support to grieving parents and guiding them toward healing.

A Look inside

The Stories Inside

Star Child includes stories and poems that complement my writing. Each story, each poem was specifically chosen to be included because of its beauty, eloquence, grace and power. The authors and poets featured here offer a sacred communion with their words, hearts, and the deep understanding of loss, pain, and love. Their words and sentiments echoed a familiar song to my broken heart. Different stories, different words, different, but, in the end, the same. In the words of Queen Elizabeth II, ‘Grief is the price we pay for love.’

Thank you for your thoughtfulness in sending me your book - such powerful poems, such honest and soul-opening writings of yours. I love the layering of letters and reflections. And what a beautiful practice, finding angels and sharing them with the world. I am grateful for your generous spirit, your beautiful heart.

Star Child is a beautifully told story. Jennifer Martin has managed to speak of her deep loss without sentimentality. Instead, she creates space for the universal elements of loss and grief to find expression. Through her words, the tearing apart of one mother’s heart moves toward a fierce resolve to find the deeper meanings in love and life. In grief, she writes, ‘Something expands and contracts inside of you.’ It’s a wise image. Then she submits her own pain to the expansion.

As a bereaved mother, I’ve read my fair share of books on the topic of grief, and this is by far one of the most powerful. Martin is not just a grieving mother but also an old soul with an artist’s vision. Her emotion-filled descriptions aren’t just lines of flowery poetry. She is brave enough to hold the looking glass up to the whole of her experience—the parts people know about, as well as the parts most people don’t talk about. In addition to sharing her precious son with us, she memorializes other children and gives us a peek into the journey of so many. Since one of the greatest difficulties in facing a child’s death is the overwhelming feeling of loneliness, this collection of stories serves as a reminder that there are others who share this path. If you have experienced the death of a child, I suspect you will find warm comfort when you discover yourself in her courageous storytelling.

The Opening Poem

“Come with me,” the angel said. “Return to the stars.”
The child leaned into the angel’s arms. The angel’s diamond blue white
wings enfolded him and covered him with stardust to warm him for the
journey home.
No cracking sounds of thunder or the shrill cries of a seagull mark this
passage-only the still sound of your sweet soul leaving, as silent now as
your voice and beating heart. Fly now through the canyons, past the sun
and the moon, remembering the way you came before. Slip freely and softly
through the ancient doorway into the realm of eternity.
Take with you all the love you can carry, but leave enough for me to
feel your presence, for I will need that love to find my way through the
darkness. For the light that was your soul has left me.
Years from now, I will find you again, and together we will soar away
from this place-this place that kept me separate from you. And I will leave
behind my body, the pain and the tears, taking with me all the joy and
spiritual wisdom I finally found amid the vast brokenness of your death.”
